Fair Housing Act
The Fair Housing Act protects people from discrimination when they are engaging in housing-related activities like renting or buying a home, getting a mortgage, or seeking housing assistance. The Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, familial status, and disability. The Fair Housing Act covers most housing. In limited circumstances, the Act exempts owner-occupied buildings with no more than 4 units, single-family houses sold or rented by the owner without use of an agent, and housing operated by religious organizations and private clubs that limit occupancy to members.
Section 3
The Section 3 Program requires that recipients of financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to the greatest extent possible provide training, employment, contracting and other economic opportunities to low-income and very low-income persons – especially recipients of government assistance for housing. In addition, the same activities must be extended to businesses that provide economic opportunities to low-income and very low-income people.
